The other day I was talking to a guy at the health club I just joined. (Never had time when I was working for someone else.) We started talking about our personal trainers. If you aren’t familiar with the term, these are fitness experts who are educated to design work-out routines based on an individuals strengths, needs and goals.
Anyway, Rick said something that struck me right between the eyes. “I got so confused reading all the books and fitness magazines. Everyone has a different opinion of what works the best. I finally figured if I was going to work out, I might as well pick one expert, listen to them and follow their program.”
Later, as I was driving my sore body home, I thought about how appropriate Rick’s comment was to Internet Marketing. Everyone’s an expert. (Even people who have yet to sell their first eBook.) And there are a million programs, books, secrets, techniques and tactics that will work for you.
The problem is, you can easily fall into what my favorite business school professor called, “Analysis Paralysis”. That’s where a lot of people are stuck. They keep reading, and it gets in the way of actually doing something.
***** I was guilty *****
I was guilty of this, too. I must have bought several hundred dollars worth of books and courses before I found what worked for me.
Fortunately, the expert I decided to follow was, in hindsight, an excellent choice. And by following his advice and listening to his ideas, I have built up a couple of successful income streams.
My point isn’t that my “guru” is the right one for everyone. The point is to pick one or maybe a couple of people you really respect, and model them. Of course, make sure they are actually successful in their own businesses first. But when you find someone you respect and whose style you like, listen to their advice and follow what they recommend in their writings.
***** Save Your Brain *****
Following this strategy can save lots of brain cells that you would spend switching strategies and tactics. It avoids confusion and gives you a good point of reference from which to work.
You don’t have to keep reading and searching for the latest eBooks. Assume your guru knows the latest tactics and will advise you of how well they work.
I’m not saying you never look at another eBook or eZine again, it’s just that you have one primary star you follow, it’s that much easier to find your way.

When advertising for a particular business a lot of people make the mistake of advertising false promises to attract the customers. Well we will definitely get customers to visit your site with the promises but if we fail to live up to our promises then you can be sure that you will soon lose business and will not have very good reviews online. After all its only by reviews that a particular site is recognized.

Do some good research before you select somebody as your guru. Decide which field you want to make money and select one from that field as ur guru

Picking the right Guru can be just as big a problem as trying to follow all the marketing advice that’s out there, but there is one way to narrow it down. The first step is to select those that are proven that they know what they are talking about and then from that group you choose the one who writes in a language that you understand. By that I don’t mean English, I mean they write in such a fashion that it all makes sense.

Eventhough experience is the best teacher for anyone in any field, the time and other constraints doesnt allow us to do many experiments. This is where,as you said, gurus who have first hand experience comes to our rescue. The onus on us is to scout for such people and follow them as such and not blind leading the blind.

Really it’s very nice post.I think nothing is most important than experience.experience is the best teacher for anyone.

Yeah, I’m a newbie, and careful as I am, I seem to still fall prey to glib talkers who sell products that promise you heaven and earth just to get you to push your paypal button on. The dilemma now is how to choose a genuine guru who wouldn’t want to siphon your money out each time he speaks. Both scammers and non-scammers seem to display the same persuasive fluency. This is why I call it a dilemma.

My take on it is this… sometimes it’s best to get your feet wet and experience things on your own. It’s great to get some advice, but like you said with all the “guru’s” out there, the amount of valid/false information is really overwhelming. So for me… I try to do things on my own, and work from there.

Richard Simmons has been around for years and Tony Little is okay, but really his claim to fame is the Gazelle and that thing sucks.Go with the Richard Simmons tapes for about 6 weeks and see what happens. Then try Tony’s tapes, this will help keep you from falling in a rut too.

Personal trainers are a terrible terrible source of knowledge. I don’t want to generalise but most (certainly not all but a majority) of them has a poor education, finished some courses and will feed you broscience. I know it takes some effort to research all this stuff on-line but it’s still better to use methods supported by scientific research than by “yeah bro, I’ve heard it works pretty good from that one guy at met at the supplement shop the other day”.

I’ve actually found that a “personal trainer” in most fields provide good science simply from the fact most of then DO what they’re showing you how to do … it’s word-of-mouth from actual experience which is better science in my opinion…
