It is a widely held belief within the blogoshere that a blogger should publish a post every single day – if not multiple times per every single day. because of this many feel blogging is just too much work…who in their right mind actually wants to think up all that content?
After listening to the latest Friday Traffic Report radio show I thought the same things Jack Humprey thought:
How much harder is it to do PPC marketing or article marketing when it all takes considerable work?
It all depends on you doing what you like and if you don’t like producing content then find a new game to play because this is serious business. The production of quality content are the waves that guide internet surfers to their desired destination.
How else are they going to get there?
And although I strongly believe this, I do not necessarily subscribe to the “post every single day” theory for three main reasons:
- People need time for your post to fully soak in. Stop making your readers play “catch up” and let your content marinate in their minds for a while…but not for too long though because the people are hungry and need to be continuously fed. Just make sure they chew that food first :D
- If you are not getting at least 100 to 200 unique visitors every day consistently, then I would venture to say you’re on the borderline of waisting content. If no one saw your post yesterday, what diffrence is your post today going to make? It is wiser to promote the posts you already do have because of reason #1.
SECRET TIP: Fully market and advertise your post URLs just as you would do for your main URL!
- Most novice bloggers who subscribe to the “post every day” theory do so mainly for SEO benefits. But as Google’s unspoken Golden Rule says:
Build your site for real live human users, NOT for search engine robots!
Once real users become engaged in your content the robots will surely come. Besides, most of those extra posts tend to be merely miscellaneous ramblings so…
…here’s another SECRET TIP: use Twitter for all your miscellaneous ramblings ;)
All of this reminds me of a comment Sire (premeir Australian blogger of WassUpBlog.com) left here on MSB:
Caleb, that is true, but frequent posting is only advantageous as long as the content is of a high quality, if not then I reckon less is best.
Now tell us what your posting frequencies are and why :?:

Follow-up comment rss or Leave a Trackback February 25th, 2009 at 11:36 pmThanks for the link love Caleb, it is really appreciated. I post whenever I have a chance. I would love to post more often, but I know that if I forced myself to do that then the quality would suffer so I only post when time allows me the opportunity.

Numerous amounts of Internet marketers have stood clear of PPc marketing campaigns because they have gotten wind of horror stories of how individuals have lost money with these programs. Instead of concentrating on the rewards PPC marketing has to offer, they concentrate solely on the risks involved. Which for the most part is understandable, for the newbie.

Your tip one has really occured many times now, Basically everyone starts out at the same level. They just need to take it step by step. Recognize the fact that they will be around for a long time and you will have up times and down times. Life is like that anyway.

Very well put. I’ve never subscribed to those theories and feel it is a total waste; it completely depends on your readership. It may take some time to figure them out though.
An interesting example – Darren Rowse with a subscriber-base just shy of 100K posts one or more articles per day and averages 25-50 comments per post.
I have a current subscriber base of 200+ with approximately the same average….I post every 2-3 days or so.

…Dennis, that’s the key! Basic marketing applies to any business, but your unique situation, readership, content, etc. is what spells out the exact details that YOU specifically need to build on.
As a sidenote: If we all had just shy of a 100k readers, then we probably wouldn’t be having this discussion….

Unless I misread you, I think you misinterpreted my example.
He has oh so many more readers and yet we average almost the same amount of comments on each…to me, another vote for not having to post daily. :)

Interesting observation though Blogger Source…I’m glad you left this comment.

Great article. Your second point makes some much sense.
[Reply]
Well, here’s my take on it, Caleb. I have found that when I write more my traffic stays consistently higher than when I don’t. At the same time, it coincides with how many blogs I go to and write posts on also. In the first year of my blog I wrote just about 300 posts, and starting the second year I’ve written 71 posts in about 81 days. I hope I write very few posts that don’t have something significant to say, but y’all are the visitors, so you tell me.
At the same time, just to clarify something Dennis said about Problogger. I did a quick study on his posts for the last 28 days, not counting today’s post, and he’s averaging 79 comments per post. The numbers get more phenomenal when you realize that he’s rarely commenting back to anyone, and, as I said, that’s an average. He has some posts with well over 200 responses, not in February, but when you look at other months, it really gets that high. At a certain point, there are those of us who realize that commenting on one of those posts, unless you’re one of the first five or so, is a waste of your time because your response will not only get lost, but Problogger isn’t a dofollow blog, and also doesn’t have CommentLuv, so the link is relatively worthless. Still, we read it because there’s just great stuff there. So, the comparison’s between Problogger and any of us, at least right now, doesn’t work.

Well Mitch, ProBlogger put in more work than most of us because of the sheer time he’s been in this game…he has literally been through most (if not all) of the changes that internet marketing has gone through, so his posts have a higher perceived value.
As for a link from him ‘being worthless’, he doesn’t NEED a “do-follow” tag because he has a seriously strong “do-follow” readership…All the rest of us can hope for -in that regard- is a positive blog review from him!
However, it would be nice and more proBlogger-like to actually comment back to those who comment to him…of course he would probably say thats a bit too many for him to comment back to
[Reply]
Oh trust me, Caleb, I don’t begrudge him not commenting as much because of the sheer volume; that, plus he runs a couple other blogs, B5 Media, and probably some other businesses; kind of like John Chow. And probably his not being a dofollow blog keeps down the number of comments, which was my point; he might like it that way, or it might have been a deal with Google, since, as you know, he was ’slapped’ once with the penalty. However, it would still be nice to get something from commenting on his blog; guess we’ll just have to deal with getting good information instead.

In regards to Problogger, the fact that he is who he is, is enough reason for people to comment. I think a lot of them do so hoping that some of the traffic will rub of on them.

Commenting on ProBlogger can also be a viable branding tactic…if ppl see you there for sooo many times leaving meaningful comments, they tend to start thinking “you’re somebody”!

I try to post a minimum of three times a week, including my new weekly series post. I concur that more than quantity, it is quality that counts. If you can have three posts a day that are gold, then you should go for it, but at the same time, you could overwhelm your subscribers – if I look at a feed that has 100 unread items after a week, I feel less motivated to check it out because I feel like it will take forever to catch up.
