Hostgator -one of the most popular web hosting companies around- brought something very innovative to my attention. I accidentally found out about this after having my site transferred from another marketers closed out reseller account to mine.
Originally, the name MarketSecrets.biz was bought as the address for a product which I had acquired the private label rights to. The hosting was under the marketer’s reseller account whom I acquired the PLR product from which shortly thereafter was deactivated. Of course, this ticked me off
because I had spent money to purchase the rights as well as made monthly payments for the hosting and now it seemed as though I’d been HAD!
Immediately, I called Hostgator to explain the drama and that’s when they informed me that I had something called a “Baby Account” which allowed me to transfer all the folders and files of that site and have it hosted under my “Baby Account” that I had owned for quite a while. And since the name was bought through GoDaddy, all I had to do was change the server names to Hostgator’s server names, log into my hostgator c-panel to select “Add-Ons” and insert the MarketSecrets.biz URL there, then VOILA…
…two sites now hosted under one account at one monthly rate of $9.95 :!:
The support guy also told me I could do this with an unlimited amount of domain names – maybe a bit of exaggeration on his part … the only catch was a $30 flat fee per transfer. Of course, even this would have been unnecessary had the the domain name been completely new and devoid of any folders or files.
But the best part by far that I pictured in my mind was buying up say 10 domain names and inserting them into my babby account which essentially creates 10 seperate c-panels ALL under one account for one monthly cost of $9.95.
Now that’s some serious savings for all my future site hostings.
This “add-on” technique coupled with a tip from my upcoming post are just more ways for keeping your site’s lights on so stay tuned.
SIDENOTE: Obviously, I uploaded the WordPress site you’re viewing now to the MarketSecrets add-on and simply dumped the PLR product. This ordeal also taught me about the dangers of being hosted under someone’s “re-seller account” … if they get shut down, you’re S.O.L.

Hey Caleb, Interesting post that made me think back to when I first bought my blog. I had a similar incident happen to me after I purchased a blog. The prior owner also had a resellers acct. so when I went to Hostgator with a problem I was informed that my acct. was pointing to another name as in Yahoo/Australia with a resellers acct. I had no idea what this meant(I was told it was like I didn’t own the blog ) or what to do. I had a guy from tech.help at Hostgator who helped me out with everything and after losing some of my posts and having my whole blog disappear for awhile during the transfer… Thanks for sharing.

Yes, I am going go here; Preferences for Add-ons should be dealt with in the Add-ons Manager because de-clutter Firefox Preferences and 2. eliminate confusion between what’s a Firefox feature and an Add-on.

This has nothing to do with FireFox…this has to do with domain name (URL) add-on’s which are handled within a sites’s c-panel

Choosing a hosting provider that allows you to host multiple domains under one account will save you not only money but also your time without the need to open a new account for each site. This way you can create several websites to promote different products without having to pay any extra fees or worry about many different logins and passwords.

When you setup an add-on domain in a web host, this add-on domain will point to a sub-folder which is usually different with where Drupal is installed.

It points to a sub folder, yet still uses a separate domain w/o a subdomain type of URL. I haven’t learned much about Drupal yet, but perhaps its installation can be moved or duplicated to the correct add-on folder?
