Since 1995, when the government deregulated the interstate moving industry, the number of complaints against moving companies has nearly tripled.

Last year there were nearly 9,000 complaints, and only a handful of investigators authorized by the (FMCSA), to investigate the cases.

At one time, the Interstate Moving Industry industry was a tightly regulated profession, with only a few licensed companies operating state to state; however, by the late 1990s, there were hundreds of companies. The old tariff system, with its fixed prices, was replaced by a fixed bid system, which allowed companies to compete for jobs by offering better service and lower prices. As the competition threatened to drive down prices, moving companies adopted new practices which enabled them to inflate their prices and defraud the public.

In typical moving fraud, companies offer inexpensive “low ball” estimates for the move. But after the consumer has signed the contract, and the moving men have packed the belongings, they inform the customer that due to unforeseen additional circumstances, described in the contract’s fine print, the move will cost a lot more. If the consumer objects his belongings will be held hostage until he pays.

The best defense against moving fraud is to recognize unethical companies ahead of time. And never, allow a mover to touch the possessions in your house until you have checked him out thoroughly.

3. Be skeptical of websites that look good, but could be run by dishonest brokers.

5. If you are asked for a significant up front deposit, look for another company
6. Every time you talk with a company to get an estimate, get that company’s name and any aliases it might operate under, along with an address, phone number and its Department of Transportation and MC, or motor carrier, license numbers
7. The mover doesn’t provide you with a copy of “Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move,” a booklet movers are required to supply to their customers in the planning stages of interstate moves.
8. The company’s Web site has no local address and no information about their registration or insurance.
9. The mover claims all goods are covered by their insurance.
10. Offices and warehouse are in poor condition or nonexistent.
11. On moving day, a rental truck arrives rather than a company-owned or marked fleet truck.
12. Also ask for the owners name and how long the company has been in business under that owner. Also ask for three references from people who’ve used the company to move in the last few months — and call those references.
13. Visit the company, check out their office, and check them out on the Internet.
14. Call the Better Business Bureau to see the company’s complaint history and check out its DOT number at the FMCSAs Safety and Fitness Electronic Records System (SAFER) Web site..
