Directories have a small database as compared to that of search engines. Hence, they require slightly different strategies. Here are some tips that will help you improve chances of getting listed on good directories -
Do the necessary research
Most of the websites built are focused on promoting business through the web. Just submitting a site to a directory and expecting incoming links isn’t the right approach. There’s a lot of research work to be done. First of all you need to understand your business very well, its scope and the areas that you need to concentrate on, may it be industry specific or even the geographical areas. This is a pre-requisite to the next step.
Select the appropriate category for your website
Directories consist of various categories like Arts, Business, Science, etc. It is very important to understand under which category (and even the sub-category) your website can be listed. So choose a category that clearly matches with the theme of your website.
Be Patient
Directory Submissions is a very time consuming process since directories are manually edited. It can take up to two or more months to get you a good listing. This, I would say is also dependent on the category that you selected for listing your website. The person reviewing the website has the rights to change the category, but if he feels that the submission is inappropriately placed, then he can even reject your submission.
Re-Submit, but don’t spam
Once your site gets rejected don’t get discouraged. Instead search for some better category and then submit your site. But don’t overdo this. Now, this is very important. Usually in such cases people try and submit their sites in various categories. Remember, that the reviewing is done manually and hence an individual can easily come across such deceptions. The person reviewing your site does a thorough inspection of it (specially the home page) and then decides whether your site can be listed. Some people engage in putting up copies of the same website with different domain names (commonly called as mirror sites). Once the reviewer comes across such deceptions he may even be entitled to delete your submission from the directory.
Developing and modifying the content of your site
The content of your site is very important feature that will help you get a good listing. Hence, while developing a website, see to it that you consider all aspects that are necessary for inserting the best content on to your website. This is where the research in your own field comes in very handy. Whatever content exists on the website is reviewed by individuals and based on that they decide whether the site should be given a listing or not. Here, I have mentioned some points that you need to keep in mind while developing a website.
• Try to keep the pages as simple as possible. Avoid putting too many flashy items on the web page (especially on the home page).
• The website should strongly highlight the goals of your organization
• It should also provide necessary information about the potential customers of your business
• Target appropriate keywords using anchor text, etc.
• Avoid putting too many pictures. This will help load the page fast. (10-12 seconds is recommended)
• Avoid putting too many links. This will help people navigate through your website easily.
Having taken these steps, doesn’t necessarily guarantee a listing in any directory, however, if you follow the best practices, you certainly improve your chances of getting listed. It’s one of the easiest link building services that helps generate traffic to your website.
