Yesterday as I listened to a few people talk mild “trash” on me -they didn’t realize my side window was open allowing me to hear- a revelation occurred to me concerning human behavior:
When people are with a crowd of their family and/or peers they feel very empowered…they do and say things that they simply will not say to your face(for the most part!)
This teaches me that people in general crave being a part of a group and no matter what that group’s intentions are, those within maintain a sense of loyalty that would make the Lone Ranger and Tonto jealous. We simply love to be around people who are like us and we love teaming up for a common cause. Even in the “hood” this exists…why do you think gangs are so big? So how does this all relate to making money online…
…any one of you who aspire to the “DotCom” lifestyle simply has to findothers to hang out with in cyberspace just as it is in the real world -Neo found this out too. You have to comment on other sites and/or participate in the various online forums and make friends…it’s all about being a part of a community that looks out for your interests. So make sure you leave comments here and wherever else you visit. And of course you can always join The MarketSecrets Bloglog community.
Now since I’ve had overnight to reflect on this, I understand that those who were talking “down” on me really do not know too much about me because I keep to myself and rarely have large crowds of people at my house so the only thing they could resort to was to create negative rumors. All this shows is that they actually want to know more about me but just don’t know how to properly go about it…they either want to know what “community” I belong to or they subconsciously desire me to be a part of their “community”.
Why else would I be a topic spewing from their mouths :?:

Excellent article. it’s especially important for work-at-home people to get amongst groups, online and off.
Ya know, this is why many “tough guys” squeal like little girls when alone in a court room. LOL

hi Caleb,
Excellent observation. I’m embarrassed to say that I’ve been in that group when the window has been open, and I’ve been on the other side of the open window when people have been talking about me. Fortunately, it’s not been very often. I think it’s a good lesson to THINK before you speak, and also to remember the old saying “If you don’t have something nice to say about somebody, don’t say ANYTHING.”
As to your point about people want to be part of a group, that is indeed a key to marketing. And being part of a group can be a key to marketing success.
I’m glad I stopped by your blog again, and will make it a regular habit! :)

good point. i get that sense from bullies as well. they tend to move around in packs. there’s a greater confidence and arrogance when you’re with people who think like you. that tends to go away when a person is alone.

TradeShow: Most of us have been in both situations which is why you’d think we would’ve learned something by now, but as the saying goes, “that’s life!”…but truly if ppl talk about you with crap like “he thinks he’s all that” then they must obviously think its true ;)
Dennis: I’m like the Joker in the new Batman movie, “I can tell who’s a squealer!”
Mark: Man, I’ve met many so-called “gangstas” who’ve approached me on the cool(by themselves) bearing witness to countless jewels(word of wisdom) I dropped on them, yet wouldn’t bear that same witness to save their life whenever their peers were around. I feel like I’m talking to my lil brother -his name’s Mark too :)

I agree, the more you put in, the more you get back. Not just in terms of backlinks and affiliate hits, but in getting these relationships started. If you’re passive or uncaring, things grow static. Which is pretty much like life, but in the anonymous world of the web, you might not think that people would react in this way, but it’s basically the same.

Very good post about group mentality. Being somewhat of a lone wolf most of the time, I see the way that others group together not only for companionship but for courage. Courage is something that I’ve personally never had to borrow from others, so I do find it quite annoying when people go into “gang up” mode. In my mind, people like that fear those with the strength and fearlessness to stand on their own, and say bad things about you not really because they want to know you, but to knock you down a few pegs so they can feel better about THEMSELVES.
As for wanting to be in, the only group I ever really want to be in is the group that’s making the $$$$! ;) Surrounding myself with those that have already made it is always my goal.
And you are right about creating your community out here…it’s really what drives the most successful websites, and yes, you have to work hard at it! ;)
Great site! I will be back!

You have a point about ppl desiring to knock you down…it’s just that I’d rather look at a more positive side since the negatives in this as well as in anything else in life are so easy to spot.
Surrounding yourself with success varies depending on where you’re at/grew up from, so I started off by surrounding my mind with successful images and studies of those who emulate the success I aspire to and wouldn’t you know it: the successful ones began to attract themselves unto me!
But this is all part of the Secret of creating something from nothing ;)
btw: Thanx for finally stopping by and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

Caleb, I wouldn’t worry about being a member of their group. They sound like a negative bunch who would only bring you down. When picking a group to join you want one that builds you up not knocks you down.
The same goes for commenting. If you find something that is wrong in a post, rather than just telling the blogger the post sucks, I’ve seen so many bloggers do this, it is better to offer constructive criticism and say what can make it better. If you can’t do this it is better not to say anything at all.
As for your post, it was perfect. :D

Yes, naturally. Humans are a very social species. Feelings and attitudes tend to increase within a group. I once asked my friend this : “if you were to live on an island, and were given a lifetime supply of one food, what would it be?” this was her answer “poison”. Haaha, but seriously, it’s a clever answer.. you would go insane all by yourself. We need company.
